First impressions When it opened in 1924, awed journalists wrote up the palatial country house hotel as a ‘Riveria in the Highlands' and ‘the eighth wonder of the world'. So you'll be getting that it's large and impressive - even by modern standards.
USP Gleneagles is all about opulence and glamour. The ballroom was the venue for a 1994 showcase (for Sony music executives) performed by a very young - and very drunk - Oasis. Back in 1955, the same ballroom provided the backdrop for a Christian Dior runway show.
Spa lowdown There are 20 treatment rooms, a steam room, a hot sauna cabin, a warm, dark vitality pool plus a gym and both indoor and outdoor heated pools. Many of the treatments feature products made from local ingredients. As Gleneagles reasonably points out, why would you ignore the botanical larder on your doorstep?

Book in for The personalised ‘Be in the moment' massage (£165) which uses Gleneagles' own oils. The spa's balms, oils and scrubs are made with herbs and plants - borage, sea buckthorn, rosehip, St John's Wort and pine - found on the Perthshire estate.
Room report Many have views over the 850-acre Gleneagles estate and out towards the surrounding Ochil Hills. The décor is quiet five-star luxury with muted velvets and damasks inspired by the Scottish moorlands and mountains around you.
Bathroom goodies The hotel takes inspiration (and ingredients) from its vast estate to create products: so there's Gleneagles Scotch Heather shower gel, shampoo and conditioner; Silver Birch hand wash and lotion.
Extracurricular activities So many, but don't miss the birds of prey experience (it's called Gleneagles, right?). We were guided around the grounds by Harris hawks called Harry and Luna. The birds shake their tails to tell you when and where you can move. It's like being herded… from the sky. Completely fascinating.
On the menu Gleneagles has something to suit every taste, from the Michelin-starred Andrew Fairlie restaurant to the spa-adjacent Garden Café and everything in between.
Who should go Spa-lovers who also like shopping, fine dining and drinking cocktails.
Good for The sheer range of outdoor activities: golf (obviously), hiking, climbing, bouldering, riding, biking, fishing and off-road driving, to name just a few.
Less good for Intimacy. Gleneagles is more like a small town than a single destination (there's a mini mall of luxury boutiques inside the hotel).
