NEW YORK, Dec 21 (Reuters) - The company that owns and operates adult entertainment websites including Pornhub.com will pay $1.8 million to the U.S. government to resolve a probe into its ties to an alleged sex trafficking operation, federal prosecutors said on Thursday.

"It was very troubling for us to learn that a production company was using criminal means to produce content," Solomon Friedman, a partner at Aylo owner Ethical Capital Partners, told Reuters on Thursday.

The charge stems from Aylo's websites hosting of content from pornography websites GirlsDoPorn.com (GDP) and GirlsDoToys.com (GDT), whose creators and operators were charged in California in 2019 with deceiving and coercing young women to appear in sex videos. Several were convicted.

STOCKHOLM, Dec 20 (Reuters) - The European Union added three adult content companies - Pornhub, Stripchat and XVideos - to its list of firms subject to stringent regulations under new online content rules, the bloc's industry chief Thierry Breton said on Wednesday.

EU regulators determined the adult sites fell within the scope of a landmark law designed to police online content because, like Facebook, TikTok and Wikipedia, they have more than 45 million users each. 

Under the agreement, prosecutors will after three years dismiss the charge against Aylo as long as the company improves its compliance protocols. Aylo will also have an independent compliance monitor for that period.

Under a deferred prosecution agreement, the U.S. Attorney's office in Brooklyn charged Montreal-based Aylo Holdings, formerly known as MindGeek, with one count of engaging in unlawful monetary transactions involving sex trafficking proceeds.

The DSA kicked in for the biggest online platforms in August. The requirements also include carrying out risk assessments, giving researchers access to publicly available data and filing regular transparency reports.

Pornhub, XVideos and Stripchat are now classed as 'very large online platforms' and are subject to more stringent controls under the Digital Services Act, according to the European Commission, the EU's executive branch. The EU has used the law to crack down on Elon Musk's social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, by opening an investigation on Monday into whether it failed to do enough to stop the spread of illegal content such as hate speech or incitement of terrorism.

Europe's digital law also calls for measures to curb the risk of spreading illegal content online, such as child sexual abuse material, or content that breaches 'fundamental rights' like privacy, such as 'non-consensual' images or deepfake porn.
